OWH --- SPECIAL REQUEST

Special Request for a Special Unit: Mail!
Cardmakers....we have some sad news for you, and yet an opportunity that we can't pass up!

Captain Dale Goetz, Chaplain, was killed in action just weeks ago, August 30, 2010, in Afghanistan. He is the first Chaplain to die in combat since the Vietnam War - almost exactly 40 years ago. Chaplain Goetz leaves behind a wife and three boys, ages 10, 8, and 13 months.

The Chaplain and his unit had not even been in-country for a month when he and four other Soldiers were lost when their Humvee was hit by an IED. In all, this unit lost 10 Soldiers in their first month - and are dealing with deployment without the one whose job it is to keep up morale: their Chaplain.

OWH is taking on Chaplain Goetz's unit to receive cards, and a box is going out to his Chaplain's Assistant immediately - packed with the best of the best for them!

Ways YOU can help:

1.AnyHero mail. We'd love to shower them with mail from home after all they've been through in such a short time. If you'd like to send a note of encouragement, please send it to our Federal Way location - please do not mention the tragic loss, they need uplifting messages and not reminders of their unit's angst. Mark your letters "GOETZ" on the outside envelope or with a stickynote and we'll make sure that card or letter makes it into one of the boxes upcoming for that unit.
Operation Write Home
35205 13th Pl SW
Federal Way WA 98023
Cards will be sent in each of their boxes for months to come, so please continue sending mail. All our shippers need more letters, but the Washington address will be the one taking on Goetz's unit.

2.Make a donation. The Goetz family has set up a memorial fund. Dale often purchased materials with his own money in order to have up-to-date, relevant information for his soldiers. This fund will allow chaplains to access money without having to dig into their own wallets.
Checks should be made out to the "Dale A. Goetz Memorial Fund" and sent to:
The Bank at Broadmoor
155 Lake Ave.
Colorado Springs, CO 80906

3.Make more cards! OWH is able to support units like this because of wonderful, generous crafters like you. Your donations of cards and finances help us continue supporting those standing in harm's way - and encouraging those going through severe trials as this unit is suffering. Thank you for your continuing support!
Many thanks to Becca, a cardmaker and a member of a Chaplain's Spouses group, who made us aware of this special need and is connecting us with the unit on the ground.

trick or treat - SP6

trick or treat - SoftPencil Designs. For lack of a better term I call this a flip flap card. I used the tutorial from Natalie with Chi Chi Memories. Although mine didn't turn out quite like the tutorial as my die had a different shape and it was a little difficult to figure where to mark for cutting. But I think it's still very cute. The top image in the photo is the front and the outside of the flap (which will get flipped). The bottom of the image is the flap, flipped up and exposing the inside of the card. I printed extra bats for the inside and the sentiment is a plastic embellishment. All the bats and the little cute kiddoes in Halloween costumes are available in SoftPencil's shop.

Just a note - CTD112

Ok, I am not sure how I feel about this card. I think it could be very pretty, but then, I think it may be too busy. Oh well, it's done and that's the best thing I can say about it. I used the color combo for Color ThrowDown112 - red riding hood red, pumpkin pie, and old olive. Stamps are all from Stampin! Up.

fA-LA-LA CCM.SC#15

fA-LA-LA - Chi Chi Memories Sketch Challenge #15. This sketch was pretty clean and simple. But I punched it up another notch using an oval scallop die. I love this cup and saucer from Chi Chi Memories shop. And when I saw it I knew I wanted to make it into a Christmas card. It reminds me of a cup of hot cocoa and that puts me in the mind of fall and winter, thus my Christmas - y themed card. The randomly picked winner this time will win two adorable images from Chi Chi's a little boy in a bee costume and a little girl in a ladybug costume, just in time for Halloween crafting. Striped cardstock is from Pink Paisley. Embellies are from Keep in Touch kits.

Touch the Hearts - PPC-CC32

Touch the Hearts of Others, as Angels do - Picture Perfect Creations - Color Challenge #32 - pear pizzaz, cajun craze, more mustard. I really like this color combo. I am a FALL person so these color suit me to a T. The stamps I used are all gifts that were given me when I left Houston and moved north of Dallas. So they don't have labels on them to stay who makes them or where they came from. But this Angel stamp is one of my all time favorites and I haven't used it in ages. Sooo.
Well, there aren't really any deets for this one except that I have entered it into the challenge at Picture Perfect Creations for this week.

Best Witches - Ward Digis - CHALLENGE w/ Prizes!!!

This little image is called WitchyWoman and it is one of Ward's Digis that we are featuring this week.
There's a challenge this week with prizes!!!
She really makes a cute little Halloween card whether you want to go all out and glitz her up or even if you want to keep her CAS. I used my computer to color her and I added a cardstock cut out of a bat.  The base of my card is DCWV glitter cards. I added a red tag under the image just to raise it up a bit. The ribbon slide tag is from So Sophie and the ribbon is from Keep In Touch Kits.
I am about petered out on Halloween cards. I need to make about 5 Thanksgiving cards and then get really busy with more Christmas cards. I send out about 45-50 Christmas cards every year and I make them all myself. I have also volunteered to make Christmas cards for our service men and women. I believe I have a little over a dozen made so I need to get to crankin' on those.

My Deer - Happy Anniversary - PPC-CC31

My Deer, Happy Anniversary - Picture Perfect Creations - Color Combo #31 rose red, river rock, perfect plum, and riding hood red. My plum doesn't show up very true in the photo but it is plum. I stamped my deer and then heat embossed. Then I used my aqua painter to fill in the body. I punched two small holes on either side of the deer's neck and added a very narrow piece of red satin ribbon. I used the same ribbon on the card base. I Used my Scor Buddy to score lines on the river rock cardstock and then I punched holes and added the brads. The deer stamp is from Layers of Color and the sentiment is from Technique Tuesday. All inks are Stampin' Up.

Snowflakes - Oh! Alice & wee Memories

Snowflakes - Oh! Alice #32 - Down the Rabbit Hole.Use a hole or circle on your project.  I chose a pre-cut card face for my project. I stamped the 3 snowflakes (flowers from Kaiser Craft CS720 Flowers set). I stamped 2 in pale blue and 1 in light grey. Then I head embossed with clear eb powder. I added the little siler stickers to the centers and attached to my cardstock. The 2 in the back are attached directly to navy cardstock. The one in the front is popped up on dimensionals and I added a little piece of silver twine to give it an ornamental feeling. I stamped Merry Christmas with the Satmipn' Up! Party Punch. I like the poast stamp look of it.
This card is also entered in the wee Memories challenge CAS and/or Tags. The wee Memories challenge is sponsored by Simon Says Stamp this week.

Blue Christmas - the sour cream and salt process

Blue Christmas - the sour cream and salt process. Created for my PaperCraftPlanet Cuttlebug-ers Challenge #87. Which is to use your bug to cut a metallic tag ( I used Spellbinders Labels #9).
To cut the tag you may have to shim it up quite a bit. But start thin and work your way up. My sandwich is A Plate, B Plate, die, metal, B Plate, Two Tim Holtz grunge board sheets and two pieces of cardstock. I had to run it through my bug two or three times to finally get it cut all the way around the die.

The Sour Cream and Salt Process -
Before I get to my card I really want to explain my technique. You see, I know acid will tarnish/distress copper. But, THIS card wreaked havoc on my brain. I just couldn't get it to look the way I wanted, sort of an antiqued copper with some verde de gris. However, that said, I am mighty pleased with my finish product. I took my Copper and cleaned it up with some Ranger Inkssentials water - based Stamp Cleaner. Then I stamped the Reindeer from Layers of Color Reindeer Waltz in tourquoise ink, (note ink color doesn't really matter because) I embossed with clear embossing powder. Then the fun becgan, NOT! I took a sponge brush and painted the sour cream over the surface of my piece fo copper, covering up my reindeer. Then I sprinkle wet salt all around. I heated the surface with my heat gun for about 20 seconds. Then set it aside to assemble the rest of my card. I came back to my copper, placed it under the faucet and rinsed/scrubbed the salt and sour cream away and Voila! I used my tourquoise and brown ink pads with my daubers to distress the vanilla cardstock. I cut 2 of the Grand Labels #4 for my matte and distressed with more of the brown ink.

So if you are up to a challenge please join us over on PCPCuttlebug-ers this week. I'd love to see what you can do with this challenge. Remember the only required part of the challenge is to cut a tag from metal with your 'Bug".

Just a little something I felt compelled to Share...

Crisis in the Gulf

Boudreaux suddenly quit drinking, took a bath, quit chasing women, quit his poker games and started laying around.
He started cutting the grass around the church, even painted it and was faithful to be first to attend church on Sundays!
Father Thibodeaux asked him what about dis wonderful change that had done overtook him.
Boudreaux explained, "I heard "Crisis in the Gulf" and if He's dat close, I wanna be good to go!

New Sheriff in Town - CSCC95 - High Noon

Happy Birthday to the New Sheriff in Town! Today's Cinema Saturday Creative Challenge is the movie High Noon. The story of a sheriff who stands alone against a criminal who vows to kill him. Not the town, not even the beautiful Grace Kelly his love will stand up and support him. My card has a lighter theme. I think it's perfect for a young man who's coming of age, "the new sheriff in town" so to speak.
I used some red plaid dp to make my western style shirt and I used a piece of red cardstock to make the bandana in the pocket with my SU set Wanted stamps. The star is a piece of rhinestone studded jewelry. It may sound feminine but it looks great as a sheriff's badge. The button is an old Levi's button.

Traditions - Cook Up A Card Recipe Challenge

My dear friend Monika Reeck is a DT member @ Cook Up A Card Recipe Challenges. She invited me to join in the challenges and this week the challenge RECIPE is this:
3 ~ Autumn Colours
2 ~ Ribbons
1 ~ Poem or verse

I was able to work out the 3 autumn colors and the 1 poem or verse, but for my card only one ribbon cut into 2 pieces would work. Hope that doesn't disqualify me. :O)

I used DCWV and cut out the sunflower and leaves. 7 Gypsies furnished the stickers for my poem and traditions tab. Hambly and My Minds Eye provided the background.

Autumn is my favorite time of year. I love the changing of the leaves and the way the world prepares for it's long winter's nap.

If you like recipe challenges then be sure and check out the ladies at Cook Up A Card Recipe Challenges. I'm sure they'd love to see what you come up with using their recipes.

A wise owl once told me... Cinema Saturday #94 - Sleepy Hollow

A wise owl once told me... never sleep in a hollow. Cinema Saturday Creative Challenge #94 - The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. But if you haven't seen this one, YOU MUST! For my card I used Unity Stamps' - My, What beautiful tree!
The owl and the sentiment are from Technique Tuesday. The moon and ribbon tag are from Stampin' Up! The shimmery sky was made using a silver glitter gel pen. I added some wiggly eyes to the owl. The pumpkin and headstone are pieced from an old Halloween (store bought) card.

Just a Note - PPC-CC28

Just a NotePicture Perfect Creations Color Combo #28. The colors this week are black, pink, cherry and blue. I wasn't sure when I started if this was going to work or not. You see the little house is a piece of plastic (like the piece that comes with your Stamp-a-ma-jig) textured on both sides.

I used some rubons from Kaiser called Enchanted. I rubbed them on one side of the plastic and then on the other side I used my Permapague markers and colored the images. Then I took my Scotch Craft Stick and put glue on a piece of pale pink cardstock. Then I placed the birdhouse rubon side up on the cardstock. I trimmed around the edges and set it aside to dry. Ribbon, brad, crepe paper, paper flower, cherry dp and the sentiment are all pieces from a kit from CupCardsToGo.

This stair card was inspired by several of SoftPencil's Designs, ALL of  the little animals on the bus are friends of Michu & Ratiny. Even the school is a morphed image of Elizabeth's little house digi. I used Paint Shop Pro and took one little house and placed it on top of another, then I kept adding little houses to the left until I had enough to make my image fit a piece of cardstock 5.5 inches across. I colored the school image with the Paint Shop Pro program. The grass is a couple of scrap pieces of dp I found in my stash. The animals on the bus and Michu and Ratiny are all images from SoftPencil. The bus was cut using my Cricut and the Stretch Your Imagination cartridge (THIS IS THE PAPERSTAR CHALLENGE PORTION OF MY CARD). No animals were harmed in the creating of this card, but they were all colored using Copics and American Crafts markers.
